Lot Essay

Louise Rayner's distinctive views of busy city streets provide us with an intriguing glimpse of their architecture and social structure at the time. Depictions of Salisbury are few compared to those of Edinburgh, Hastings and Chester. A more panoramic view of a Salisbury street, presumably parallel to this as the cathedral is centrally placed, was sold at Christie's, London, 4 November 1994, lot 16 (£14,000); St Stephens's Gateway, Salisbury sold at Sotheby's, London, 5 June 1996, lot 15 (£4,500).
