Lot Essay

Alfred Downing Fripp was the brother of George Arthur Fripp (1813-1896). He exhibited at the Old Watercolour Society from 1842, acting as Secretary from 1870 until his death. He visited Rome in 1850 and executed many Mediterranean views during the next decade. No other depictions of Pompeii are recorded. The freshness and immediacy of the treatment here suggests that the sketch was taken on the spot.
