In December 1846 Lear returned to Rome after an absence of two years, however the atmosphere there was becoming unsettled. Lear decided to visit the rest of Italy and at the end of April 1847 he left Rome and travelled down to Naples, from there he caught at steamer to Palermo where he met John Proby. They toured Calabria together before returning to the south of Italy. They reached Rome on 14 October 1847 having travelled together for five months.

Rionero is a town in the province of Potenza in Italy. It was almost destriyed by an earthquake in 1851.
