THE BATTLE OF COPENHAGEN With an ACCURATE PLAN OF THE DANISH LINE OF DEFENCE AND THE ATTACK MADE UPON IT
'From a Sketch taken by a British Officer on the Spot'. The Sketch Plan with heading and key covering 19cm. x 18 cm. (page 2, cols 2, 3 & 4) Particulars of the Action which did not appear in the Gazette, Nelson attended all the soundings and scarcely closed his eyes for four days and four nights. Private letters tell of the carnage on board the Danish ships which had not a single surgeon on board any of the block ships. When our people boarded them, they found hundreds bleeding to death and in a situation at which humanity shudders Nelson offered either a few spare British surgeons or a truce. Danish officers deny that a vessel of theirs had struck her colours. Lord Nelson replied, upon his honour she had, and added, if she was not immediately given up, he would haul down the flag of truce. The Danish Officers said, they wished to treat with Lord Nelson in person - "I am Lord Nelson," replied our Hero - at the same time throwing aside his green dreadnought, and shewing his stump of his right arm, and exposing his three stars. The Danes immediately gave up the ship. Nelson tells General Lindholm that the French could not have taken one hour's fire such as the Danes had sustained for four hours. I have.. in the course of my life, been in 105 engagements; but that today was the most terrible of all page 2 cols 2-3 -- 29cm. of column space; List of British Officers killed and wounded, page 2 col 3 -- 16cm. of column space; a detailed account of events reported by Olfert Fischer, the Danish Commander in Chief page 2 cols 3-5 in a complete issue of NORWICH MERCURY, dated 25 April 1801 -- 33 cm of column space
