Lot Essay

The three-masted barque Akbar was built at Greenock for Hunter & Co. in 1839. Registered at 337 tons, she measured 102 feet in length with a 22½ foot beam and began her life trading out of the Clyde to Mauritius under Captain Arkley, a route she continued to operate for twenty years until sold to Patterson's of Glasgow who put her onto the West Indies run. Sold again to W. Baird, still of Glasgow, after only a year or two, she promptly returned to the Mauritius trade under Captain Fraser but by the mid-1860s had been sold to Turner's of Bristol. Her new English owners ran her to the West Indies as well as to South America until she finally disappears from record in 1880.
