A blue and white pilgrim flask for the Iberian Market, first half 17th century
painted to each side with scrolling lotus stems, the neck with birds and insects amonbst flowers and foliage, silver rim mount -- 10 1/8in. (25.7cms) high.
This form is probably derived from a Western Asiatic prototype similar to the Persian bronze pilgrim flask of 13th century in the British Museum. This flask is closely related to those that bear the arms of Spain, Castile and Leon quarterly, made for King Philip II of Spain (1556-98). The present flask was undoubtedly made for the Spanish of Portuguese Market.
