An Important Collection of Samplers, Needlework, Purses and Waistcoats The following lots (385-549) formed part of a collection of textiles, porcelain, furniture and paintings that have descended to the present owners from Emma-Henriette Schiff von Suvero (1863-1924). Fifteen years after her death the pieces were 'sold' to the Staatliche Kunstgewerbemuseum, Vienna, in August 1939. The Museum, now known as the Museum für Angewandte Kunst (MAK), displayed and stored the items until they were rightfully restituted by the Austrian Government to the descendants of Emma-Henriette Schiff von Suvero in Spring 2003. Many of the pieces have not been on the open market for almost a century, or even longer. This collection is remarkable both in its size and in the quality of the pieces. Thanks in major part to their careful storage at the MAK, many are in unusually good condition and have retained very sharp colours. Notable, too, is the diversity of the samplers. As one might expect, there are many early Continental band samplers - and such good examples rarely come on the market - but there are also a considerable number of British and other samplers, including miniature examples and a collection of darning samplers. Needlework, purses and waistcoats make up the remainder of this fascinating collection. All the samplers and needlework are unframed.
