JACOBUS DE VORAGINE (c.1230-c.1298). Mariale. Venice: Simon de Luere for Lazarus de Soardis, 14 November 1497.

Chancery 4° (199 x 140mm). Gothic type, initial spaces with guide-letter, large title woodcut depicting a bishop lecturing, woodcut publisher's device at end. (Title stained and torn with one repair just touching woodcut, a little staining elsewhere.) Modern calf retaining contemporary panel-stamped sides [4 saints, including S. Roche, similar to, but not identical with, Goldschmidt no. 72] (sides worn). Provenance: note on the binding in Spanish, signed 'FA?', 1929 -- New York, Manhattan College, Paolino Gerli Collection (bookplate, number stamp on b6r) -- Teodoro Becu (red leather booklabel).

Part of an edition of works by Jacobus de Voragine printed between August and November 1497. Each part is separately quired and has its own colophon; almost all copies survive as individual parts. C 6525; BMC XII, 41; Essling 1129; Sander 7733; Goff J-202.
