Self-made man, head of a well-known fashion house, Gustave Van Geluwe accumulated one of the most important Belgian art collections of the 20th Century. He started his collection with work by James Ensor, Jakob Smits and Rik Wouters. After a stay in England he purchased expressionist paintings which formed the highlights of his collection. After WW II Van Geluwe carried on his activities collecting artists from 'la jeune peinture Belge', such as Louis van Lint and Maurice Wyckaert. In 1956 the collection went on show during a renowned travelling exhibition in the museums of Verviers, Antwerp, Tilburg, Ostend, Otterlo and Düsseldorf.
