Foaled in 1908, Combourg was by Bay Ronald out of Chiffonnette. At three, he won the Prix Noailles at Longchamps as well as the Prix Greffulhe and the Prix Royal Oak. He was second in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly and second in the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamps.
The son of the American painter William Stanley Haseltine, Herbert Haseltine enjoyed early acclaim by winning an Honorable Mention at his first exhibition at the Paris Salon in 1906 with Riding Off depicting two polo players. This led to a number of commissions from prominent Americans including The Meadowbrook Team for Harry Payne Whitney (Whitney Musuem, New York), Ballantrae for Walter Jeffords, Meddler for John Mortimer Schiff, and Seaside for William K. Vanderbilt. These horse portraits were usually, like Combourg, one third life size. Based on these works, Haseltine developed the concept of a sculpture titled The Perfect Thoroughbred, Compostie Type which he included in his famous series The British Champion Animals.
