Margrave, foaled in 1893, was by St. Blaise out of Lady Margaret. Lady Margaret was by The Ill-Used who was bred by Colonel Townley. His sire, Breadalbane, a good winner, numbered among his victories the Prince of Wales Stakes at Ascot, and is full-brother to the great racehorse and sire Blair Athol (1861). His dam, Ellermire, won the Chesterfield Handicap and County Plate at York along with six other races in her two year old season. The Ill-Used was imported to the United States by August Belmont of the Nursery Stud in New York, and won several races over good fields before retiring to stud.
