JAMES VI and I, King of Scotland (1567-1625) and of England (1603-1625). Letter signed (as King of Scotland) with autograph subscription ('S[erenissimi] V[estri] frater amantissimus Jacobus R') to the Archduke Albert of Austria, Stirling, 9 January 1603, in Latin, the text in a neat italic hand, one page, folio, integral address leaf, traces of seal (slight spotting, mostly in margins, small puncture in blank portion of leaf).
Written within two months of James's accession to the English throne and addressed to Albert (son of the Emperor Maximilian I) as Governor of the Low Countries, on behalf of William Moray ('Guilelmus Moravius'), a citizen of Edinburgh, who while in Dunkirk on business was seized by the English, thrown into prison, and robbed of all that he had ('captus ab Anglis in carcerem coniectus est et bonis quae illic habuit omnibus spoliatus vix ultimum supplicium evasit'). As a result business will not be undertaken in England or Holland and the king requests the archduke to intervene in the case.
Cases of Scottish merchants complaining of attacks from the English were relatively common, and foreign princes such as Albert of Austria, or the King of Denmark, were asked to intervene.
