CHARLES I, King of England (1625-1649). Autograph postscript signed (with initials, 'C R'), in the margin of a letter to Prince Rupert by Sir Arthur ASTON (d.1649, Royalist general), Reading, 21 November n.y. [1642], one page, 4to, integral address leaf, contemporary endorsement, seal (tears in margin of 2nd leaf) and: ORMONDE, James Butler, 12th Earl and 1st Marquess of (1610-1688). Two autograph letters signed to Prince Rupert, Dublin, 18 and 29 April 1644, together 3 pages, folio (integral leaves removed, remains of guards).
The King writes 'I desyre you to come hither that we may advyse what to doe, CR', on Aston's letter ordering Prince Rupert not to move away until further orders, 'his Ma[jes]ty having Received intelligens that the Ennemy is marching towards us uppon both sides of the water...'. (Aston was Governor of Reading).
Ormonde, writing as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, refers in both letters to sending men ('three companys well armed & comanded') to the defence of North Wales, where the Parliament ships are upon the coast. (3)
