CHARLES I, King of England (1625-1649). Autograph letter signed ('Your loving Oncle & faithfull frend Charles R') to Prince Rupert ('Nepueu'), Oxford, 12 July 1643, one page, folio, contemporary endorsement on verso, (integral leaf removed, traces of guard).
Referring 'the motion I made yesterday', in a letter 'to my Wyfe [Henrietta Maria]' about her forces coming through Gloucestershire in order to cause Waller's confusion. 'The beating of Waler is first & cheefly to be intended'. The King refers to this plan as 'my owen Chyld'.
In fact Sir William Waller and his force meanwhile approached from the West and, having engaged the Royalists outside Bath, made an attempt to besiege Devizes, and were defeated by Royalist forces at Roundway Down two days later.
