CHARLES I, King of England (1625-1649). Autograph letter signed to Prince Rupert ('Nepueu'), Oxford, 20 July 1643, ½ page, folio, contemporary endorsement (integral leaf removed, traces of seal, tear in blank lower edge).
Expressing gratitude 'for your often advertisements', and approving the Prince's plans, 'only I shall remember you how fitt it is to hinder Walers [Waller's] recruting by all possible meanes, it being of more importance to my affairs to Ruine him, then the taking of any Townes'.
Sir William Waller, crushed at Roundway Down and left with only the remnant of his army, had fallen back to Bristol then, with Rupert in pursuit, to Gloucester and Evesham, and finally to London to seek help from Parliamentary forces. Rupert meanwhile was outside Bristol on 23 July, taking it for the King within the next few days.
