HOLLAND, Henry Rich, 1st Earl of (1590-1649). Two autograph letters signed, the first to his wife and daughters; the second to his daughter, Lady (Frances) Paget, written from prison, n.d., 24 September 1648, 3 pages, 8vo and one page, folio (slight staining to undated letter); autograph will, signed and witnessed, n.p., 28 February 1647, on recto, 4 pages, large folio, seal; a legal opinion concerning the will (1657); four letters by members of his immediate family and a letter by Charles Gerrard (later Earl of Macclesfield) ordering officers and soldiers not to quarter in Lady Paget's house.
Holland writes before his execution, 'trouble not your selves, my intentions were suche, as I shall justifye to all the world, to have been no waye unworthye of my duty to God, my Kinge and the Kingdom ... causes always do not prosper', and to Frances Paget, 'prisoners know litle yet thinke muche', and voicing his fears about the state of the country and danger to the King. In his will, he bequeaths his 'whole revenue of Saint Bartholomews' to his wife.
