CHARLES II, King of England (1660-1685). Two documents signed ('Charles R', at the head), warrants addressed to Heneage, Lord Finch, the Lord Chancellor, the first Whitehall, 1 July 1678, 1½ pages, folio, countersigned by Henry Coventry, papered royal seal (paper detached), integral blank leaf, contemporary endorsement; the second, Hampton Court, 10 July 1679, one page, folio, countersigned by Henry Coventry, papered royal seal (paper detached), integral blank leaf, contemporary endorsement.
The first warrant is for a commission for Lieutenant Colonel William Stapleton, Captain General and Governor of the islands of St Christopher, Nevis, Montserrat and the Leeward Islands to conclude a peace treaty with the French Governor of St Christopher's Island 'although it should happen that things should come to a Rupture in Europe between the two Crownes'.
The second is for a commission appointing six Commissioners to treat with the French ambassador for peace and neutrality to be observed between English and French subjects in the islands and colonies 'lying and being in America betweene the two Tropicks'. The Commissioners are Anthony, Earl of Shaftesbury, Arthur, Earl of Anglesey, Henry, Earl of Arlington, John Earl of Bridgewater, Robert Earl of Sutherland and Henry Coventry. (2)
