DANBY, Thomas Osborne, 1st Earl of (1631-1712). Autograph letter signed to Lord Norris, Tower of London, 1 August 1679, 2 pages, 4to, integral address leaf (seal tears in both leaves, touching 2 words of text and last letter of signature).

An expression of concern at Norris's failure to take 'the exercise you used to do and w[hi]ch truly to y[ou]r Lo[rdshi]p is but necessary, both becaus you have used itt so much, and that itt is what your constitution requires to keepe y[ou]r health'. Danby gives assurances of his gratitude for Norris's support, which 'I shall not only never forgett, but make all the arrangements of all sorts that can ever be in my power', mentioning also the 'very hott weather'.

Written during Danby's imprisonment in the Tower, pending impeachment for his supposed complicity in the 'Popish Plot'. As Lord Treasurer he was deeply implicated in Charles II's devious plan to press Louis XIV secretly for subsidies to keep England out of his war on the continent. When the scheme was betrayed, Danby's impeachment was demanded, and he spent five years in the Tower, for his alleged involvement in the conspiracy.
