NELSON, Horatio, Viscount (1758-1805). Autograph letter signed ('your ever faithful Nelson & Bronte') to Lady Hamilton ('My dearest beloved Emma'), 'Victory ... 150 Leagues WSW from Madeira', 18 May 1805, 2 pages, 4to, integral blank leaf (repair in centre-fold). Provenance: Calvin Bullock Collection (Christie's sale, 8.5.1985, lot 228).
An important letter, enclosing another about arrangements for his daughter Horatia in the event of his death.
'I send you the enclosed that no difficulty should arise about My Dear Horatia in case any accident should happen to me for I know too well the necessity of taking care of those we love whilst we have the power, and these arrangements do not hasten our death. I believe quite the contrary as it leaves nothing to corrode the mind in a sick bed'. He continues that she will know how to instruct Mr Haslewood in making out the paper for the annuity (for Mrs Gibson, to whom Horatia had been entrusted in February 1801), and that if 'Mrs G.' is indiscreet, the annuity should be forfeited, 'you will see I have wrote (sic) that sort of letter which may be shown anywhere or to anybody'.
The enclosure to which he refers is presumably the extremely formal letter of 16 May (see lot 155). Both letters were written in the early days of his dash to the West Indies in pursuit of the French fleet which had escaped from Toulon.
