The Sovereigns order that Captain Inigo de Artiega's ship should be freighted in preference to, or at the same rate as, other merchant vessels sailing from Spanish ports. Three days earlier, on 7 June, Spanish and Portuguese commissioners meeting at Tordesillas had subscribed articles of agreement on their countries' respective rights of navigation and discovery in the western seas, a convention made necessary by the implications of Columbus's return from his first voyage to the Americas in September 1493.
