BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van (1770-1827). Sinfonie mit Schluss-Chor über Schillers Ode: "An die Freude"... 125tes Werk. [Full Score]. Mainz & Paris: Schott, [1826].
Large 4o. Lithographic title, engraved music, plates numbered 2322. (Lacks subscriber's list). Modern calf-backed boards.
FIRST EDITION OF THE NINTH SYMPHONY. Provenance: R. Cocks & Co., Music Sellers, London -- Her Majesty's Concerts of Ancient Music -- Michael J. Cipkala (stamps to title page).
An early issue, without the subscribers list which characterises the first issue, but lacking the metronome markings of the 1827 issue. The Concert of Ancient Music was founded in 1776 by the Earl of Sandwich and other noblemen: one of its founding principles was that no work less than 20 years old was to be performed at its concerts. The Society's concert series ended in 1848, when the general acceptance of early music had eroded their distinctiveness.
