[February 1847], the first marked 'Andantino', 41 bars on 2 pages, 4to (some spotting) in an album, otherwise blanks; the second 'espressivo a piacere', 89 bars on 4 pages, oblong 8vo, on a bifolium (some spotting); and an autograph verse signed (with initials) in French and German, 'Que je Vous aime, Das muss ich gestehn; Prenez mon coeur pour Vous! Sonst hab' ich keine Ruh!', on a fragment of paper, 43 x 90mm, backed onto a loose album leaf, also containing two other items; together with a souvenir programme of Liszt's concert in Kiev, 2 February 1847, in a fantastical chromolithographed border (yellowed); and another musical manuscript; the album speckled calf, block tooled in gilt, the upper cover lettered 'Kieff Souvenir de F. Liszt', the last line lettered over another name (sprung).

The first manuscript is a version of the Polish folksong 'The Maiden's Wish', which Liszt incorporated into the second part of the 'Mélodies polonaises' (S.249): the present manuscript differs from other known versions, in particular in the rhythmic elaborations and variant harmonies from bar 32. The second manuscript is an apparently unpublished draft of the first version of the 6th 'Consolation' (S.172).

Liszt is thought to have heard the folksong 'The Maiden's Wish' at Woronince, the estate of Princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein, during his visit to the Ukraine in February 1847: this manuscript is therefore likely to be at the earliest stage of his development of the theme.
