[SUMSION, Herbert (1899-1995)]. A collection of letters addressed to Sumsion and his wife, Alice, comprising:
Ralph VAUGHAN WILLIAMS. Six autograph letters signed, five letters signed and a receipt signed, Dorking, [19 September 1937] - 10 November 1955, two undated, mostly about staying with them for the Three Choirs Festival or about events at the Festival -- in 1952, 'I cannot immagine [sic] David Willcocks's trowsers ever coming down'; in 1955 he declines an offer to conduct 'my new symphony' (no.8), as conducting 'is becoming more and more of a strain to me', but offers to conduct 'the Lark' instead, altogether 6 pages, 8vo and 4to, in autograph, and 5 pages, 8vo and 4to, typed; together with one letter in the hand of Adeline and one in the hand of Ursula Vaughan Williams; envelopes;
Sir Edward ELGAR. Three autograph letters signed, Worcester and London, 2 April - 21 August 1931, about performances of The Dream of Gerontius, 'All right about the soloists but I do not think I shall be at the festival', and his ill-health, 3½ pages, 8vo and 4to; and letters of Zoltan KODALY (two, 1928, about conducting his Psalmus Hungaricus, including an autograph quotation), Gustav HOLST ([1931], referring to his Choral Fantasia) and one other.
