Lot Essay

Martselli Sukhorovskii painted mainly female portraits. Born in Galicia, he studied at the Imperial Art Academy in St. Petersburg from 1858, recieving five silver medals and became an Academist in 1874. Part of his success was the early use of artificial lighting and innovative display techniques. His work was admired for the great technical skill but was criticized by the establishment for being too risqué, however, his financial success inspired a whole generation of salon painters in St. Petersburg.
