A Victorian silver inkstand
Mark of Louis Dee, London, 1880
Formed as a crest of a lion rampant realistically textured and holding aloft a cross pattee fitchée, its right foot resting on another, the hinged neck opening to reveal a detachable oval glass inkwell with plain silver rim mount, the black cushion-shaped composition base applied with silver motto TOUJOURS PREST and with thin silver corded border, marked on tail, head and inkwell, the inkwell mount also stamped P & F SCHAFER. 27. The crest is that of Kettlewell, for Henry William Kettlewell, later Eyres (1857-1881). Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he changed his name to Eyres in 1878 on his 21st birthday, having inherited a large fortune from his mother's family. The crest was granted to him by the College of Arms on 5th September 1878. He married Caroline (d.1931), daughter of Samuel Sharp, in 1880, but died less than a year later on 6 October 1881.
