Shaped circular, the moulded border with shells and foliate scrolls, on three scroll feet, the field later engraved with a coat-of-arms within drapery mantling, fully marked on base, also engraved with scratchweight '39"18'

The arms are those of Northey impaling Hopkins, for William Northey M.P. (1722-1770) and his second wife Anne (d.1822), daughter of Edward Hopkins Esq. (d.1735), whom he married in 1751.

William Northey served as a member of parliament from 1747 until his death in 1770. He was member of Calne until 1761 and then Maidstone for the next seven years. He was returned as MP for Great Bedwyn in 1768 following a by-election. A Tory, educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, he was said by Horace Walpole to be one of the leading speakers in the house. He served on the Board of Trade and was a Groom of the Bedchamber from 1760 until his death.
