A German silver-gilt book-cover
Unmarked, probably Nuremberg, mid 17th century
Oblong and with two hinged hasps, the covers and spine finely engraved with flowers and foliate scrolls, the front with the figure of a saint holding the paschal lamb and a cross, the back with the figure of Hope with an anchor, each with winged cherubim above holding an inscribed ribbon, the spine with a crowned flaming heart within an inscription, the binding containing a copy of the New Testament, printed by Karl Tauchnitz in Leipzig in 1825
5¾in. (15.7cm.) wide
The inscriptions read 'Die Kreüz geprüfte Lambsgedult, getröstet sich der Gottes Huld' (The patience of the saint tested by the cross can be comforted by the Grace of God), 'In Meinem Heiland vestig ich, mein hifnungfsanker grüdet sich (In my Lord I rest assured, my anchor of hope is firmly founded), 'Mein Hertz Gedenokt an dich, Gott du krönst mich (My heart thinks of thee, God you crowneth me)

Similarities can be drawn between the engraving on the covers of this binding and the engraving of the Nuremberg goldsmith Johann Wilhelm Heel, exhibited Munich, Germanisches National Museum, Wenzel Jamnitzer und die Nürberger Goldschmiedekunst 1500-1700, nos. 484-487.
