Berlin, Fromery workshop, or Paris, one with silver mounts of Paris, 1750-1752, struck with the discharge mark of Julien Berthe 1750-1756, the other with a rubbed mark
Rectangular white enamel on copper box in the shape of a carriage, the slightly domed cover, slightly waisted four sides and base decorated with raised gilded Rocaille, with three blue painted windows, the other box rectangular, decorated with a latticework pattern enclosing flowerheads, within Rocaille borders parcel-enamelled in translucent green, both with reeded silver mounts with flanged thumbpieces

Lot Essay

This type of enamel box has traditionally been described as Berlin enamel of the type produced at the Fromery workshop. It had been supposed that the French hallmarks on most of these boxes result from their being mounted in Paris. Recent research would suggest that there is less foundation in this hypothesis.
