The initials are those of Henri d'Orléans, duc d'Aumale (1822-1897), fourth son of King Louis-Philippe (see lot 205). A brilliant soldier, he distinguished himself in Algeria but had to emigrate to England with his family in 1848. He later bequeathed his magnificent castle of Chantilly and its celebrated art collection to the Institut de France.
