THE MAGNIFICENT PRIVATE CELLAR OF JAMES W. WALTER

A portion of the proceeds from these lots will benefit the Albert Ellis Institute and the Life Skills Foundation

Lots 401 - 594

This cellared promised much...the type of cellar that you jump on a plane for! It certainly delivered, in both quality and rarity, condition and provenance.
The following lots represent a small portion of what was once a much larger collection of fine wine amassed by this wine-loving gentleman for his own pleasure and for entertaining at his home.

The collection was acquired for the most part throughout the 1950s and 1960s; the majority of the vintages here span the period of 1949 - 1966. Mr. Walter was fortunate enough to know and collect alongside Bern Laxer - the founder of Bern's Steak House in Tampa, Fla. Like Mr. Laxer, Jim Walter had a great passion for the classics of Burgundy and Bordeaux and built lasting relationships with wine importers and was able to acquire great vintages from the best producers.

Christie's Wine Department recently removed the following offering from an underground, temperature controlled cellar in the family home. The wines were arranged by Château, Burgundy village and by vintage, a truly fantastic chronical of this era of winemaking that may never be repeated.

This is a great cache of mature wines that appear on the market on rare occasions. Its provenance is without parallel, the condition of wines tasted in the cellar excellent and buyers are invited to taste examples from the cellar at our pre-sale tasting.

A joy to catalogue and handle (bottle by bottle!) and full of real gems.

Richard Brierley

As Jim Walter puts it in the front of his cellar book:

"Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world, one of the natural things in the world that has been brought to great perfection, and it offers as great a range for enjoyment and appreciation as possibly any purely sensory thing which may be acquired.

It would take a bold connoisseur, indeed - and a foolish one - to undertake listing the world's wines in order of their excellence, as many are excellent - inimitably so. Familiarity often breeds contempt; but never with wines. To become discriminating, it is necessary to taste many varieties; and discrimination brings greater and greater enjoyment. Here is a collection of some of my favorites.

RED BURGUNDY

This offering is a stunning testament to Burgundy of another era - a chronical of pre-war vintages and négociants now extremely rare.

COLLECTION DU DOCTEUR BAROLET

First offered to a wider market in 1969 at Christie's in London, the "collection of Dr. Albert Barolet" achieved incredible prices at auction with Michael Broadbent officiating. They are now relatively rare and this substantial collection is one of the largest to market in recent times. This offering was entirely shipped by François Martenot.
