The figure draped with a lion pelt about his waist, his right arm raised with a bunch of grapes, his hair entwined with vines, restorations

Lot Essay

A comparable, unattributed, figure of Bacchus in the Formal Garden at Hardwick Hall. The Hardwick figure adopts the same pose as the present piece, although modelled in reverse, holding a cup to the raised, left, hand.
