AN AMERICAN WOOTON WALNUT DESK
Late 19th century
The top with filled holes from missing gallery, with a hinged moulded frieze enclosing shallow compartments, the hinged fronts with burr walnut panels between pilasters and applied with bronze mounts, engraved anthemion and foliate palmette ornament to the left door bearing the name 'WOOTON DESK COMPANY INDIANAPOLIS, IND PATENT, OCTOBER 6 1874', the right door with similarly inscribed letters between projecting pilasters and moulding, the central locking mechanism and handle fitting to reveal on the reverse a central compartment with shelves, pigeon holes and short deep drawers for stationery, the centre with a burr maple panel with incised ebonised ornament enclosing a fitted interior with compartments and drawers, the baize-lined surface to the reverse containing four drawers below between folio compartments and shelves, the sides with burr walnut panels on projecting moulded legs and castors
