The sitter may be a descendant of John Woolfe, whose portrait was included in a sale at Christie's, London, 10 June 2003, lot 9, and which shared the same provenance as the present lot. His father, Sir John Woolfe, was Alderman and Sheriff of London, he died in April 1703 and was buried at St. Helen's, Bishopsgate. His brother, Sir Joseph Woolfe, was also a Sheriff of London.
