Lot Essay

A First Rate ship-of-the-line is shown gathering momentum as she passes Mount Edgcumbe to enter the head of Plymouth Sound. With most of her sails set to take advantage of the stiff breeze, the vessel is seen slightly heeling over as the wind takes her to probably her maximum speed judging by her wake and the white water along her hull. The flag bearing St. George's Cross at her main masthead indicates she has an Admiral aboard and, having been selected to fly his flag (i.e. to be his flagship), she is probably outward bound for an overseas station where the Admiral is to assume command.
