Lot Essay

Hayward studied at the Royal College of Art and the Slade. He painted portraits and landscapes, often in an impressionistic style, and occasionally in a more mannered technique that reveals his parallel vocation as a mural decorator. Hayward was drawn to river subjects, which allowed him to experiment with light effects. The present picture may depict his wife, Cecily.
