Burnham Beeches, in Buckinghamshire, is an ancient stretch of woodland that was acquired by the Corporation of London in 1880 - the year this view was painted. MacCallum had executed a series illustrating the seasons in 1863; Spring and Summer depicted Burnham, Autumn and Winter Sherwood Forest.
