A FINE SMALL-SWORD
Late 17th Century, probably Dutch
With slender tapering blade of flattened diamond section with a single fuller on each face of the forte stamped 'En Toledo', the iron hilt encrusted in relief with finely cast and chased silver figures, made separately and arranged in panels framed in silver lines simulating twisted wire, and representing a few Classical figures, but mostly scenes of combat between cavalrymen in late-17th century dress, the background details engraved, and the whole background originally gilt, but now russet, the wooden grip bound with twisted silver wire
