A RARE SILVER-INLAID VIKING SWORD
9th-10th Century
In excavated condition, the broad tapering double-edged blade (point missing) with wide central fuller on each face, one with traces of an incised (originally inlaid?) inscription, the iron hilt comprising short straight quillons of rectangular section and "cocked hat" pommel inlaid with a design of repeated squares framing swastikas

Lot Essay

The hilt is of Nordman's type H, dated to circa 800-950, of which examples have been found all over Europe (including Britain)
