A RARE GERMAN GOTHIC SPORTING CROSSBOW
Late 15th Century
Fitted during its working life with a robust steel bow struck with a mark, a cross within a circle surmounted by a coronet, and retained by iron loops (wedges replaced), slender wooden tiller almost entirely veneered in white and brown horn, horn nut with later cords, long curved iron lever trigger, side-mounted iron sight, and large iron stirrup at the front (bolt-clip, cranequin-lugs and fore-sight missing, iron parts with surface pitting)
