A GERMAN SPORTING CROSSBOW AND CRANEQUIN
Late 16th early 17th Century
With robust steel bow struck with a mark, a cross in a circle surmounted by a coronet, secured by its original cords and retaining its original green pom-poms (one loose, bow-string replaced), wooden tiller swelling towards the middle, hollowed at the cheek-piece, and entirely veneered in white staghorn on the top and bottom, and ebony inlaid with white horn stringing on the sides (butt-plate and small sections of ebony missing), iron nut (an early working replacement) engraved with the letter 'J', iron cranequin lugs, iron lever trigger with its original cord binding and green pom-poms, swivelling safety-catch, set trigger, iron suspension-ring, and adjustable iron peep-sight replacing the bolt-clip, the cranequin with large flat gear-box retaining its original cord loop and green pom-poms, and slender winding arm with turned handle of wood and staghorn (belt hook removed from ratchet bar, iron parts with some surface rust)
