The Painting a Playmate series was commissioned by Playboy in 1960. A selection of the magazine's favorite artists were invited to paint portraits of Ann Davis, the Playmate of the month for September 1960. The resulting paintings were featured in a pictorial a few months later. Such commissions are emblematic of Hefner's support of the arts and artists, and his unique determination to integrate fine art within the magazine.
