LEARY, Timothy (1920-1996). Typed letter signed ("Tim") to Murray Fisher, Millbrook, NY, 27 March 1967. 1 page, 4to. Leary encloses three chapters of his memoirs for consideration by Playboy (included in this lot). The work did not run because much of the material overlapped with his interview which had been published the previous year (see below).
[With:] "High Priest." Carbon and typed manuscript for chapters 1, 2 and 15 of Leary's memoir. 32 pages, 4to. WITH SEVERAL CORRECTIONS IN LEARY'S HAND.
[With:] Typed letter signed ("Timothy Leary") to A.C. Spectorsky, Millbrook, NY 10 November 1965. 1 page, 4to. Leary forwards a brochure (included in this lot) on a lecture on psychedelics that was coming to Chicago. "We have considerable data on the use of the psychedelic experience in marital relationships and in male-female communication. As you probably know, all communication is tremendously intensified, complicated, energized during the LSD experience..."
[With:] An archive of materials relating to the interview with Leary conducted which appeared in Playboy, September 1966. Including: Two carbon typescripts of the interview, one with some editorial changes. -- Lengthy carbon typed manuscript of the interview, heavily emended in several editorial hands, and with taped inserts throughout. -- Typescript of the introduction with editorial corrections. -- FISHER, Murray. Two manuscript lists of notes for the interview. -- Various clipped and cut sections rejected from the interview. -- Yellow four-book proof sheets. -- IBM tape of the interview. -- Galley sheets of the interview with editorial corrections.
Leary was introduced to Playboy readers in 1963 in a package of articles on hallucinogens, and this "...began nearly a decade's uneasy relationship between magazine and drug guru. Playboy often championed Leary and his causes, but in the end became disenchanted and discarded him. Nevertheless, the Leary connection was important for Playboy because more than anyone else who handled the subject in the magazine, he articulated the link between drugs and sex." -- Weyr, p. 144.
