POHL, Frederik (b.1919). Forty-five typed letters signed ("Fred" or "F") to A.C. Spectorsky, Robie Macauley and Vickie Haider, New York and Red Bank, NJ, 17 October 1962-8 December 1977. Together 49 pages, 4to and 8vo.
A HIGHLY DETAILED CORRESPONDENCE, COVERING A 15-YEAR SPAN. The letters show the development of Pohl as a contributor to Playboy, first under the editorship of A.C. Spectorsky and later Robie Macauley. Several of the letters are little more than a one sentence note forwarding a contribution, but many are tightly written, dense letters of important literary content.
7 September 1962: "I know we look very queer to you. I wonder if you appreciate how equally queer you look to us. Sf writers are used to dealing with one man--frequently perverse and always difficult, but still one man. It is hard for us to get along with a committee..."
22 August 1964: "... This all began when some of the saucerians got my dander up this spring by claming I had a closed mind. I said, no, I had a wide-open mind, in fact flapping... I also have a Ku Klux Klan book almost completed which might make an article." He forwards a 9-page typed outline for a story on "The Great 1964 Saucer Flap" (included in this lot).
31 August 1964: "... here's a short outline on computers that I'd like you to look over." Pohl forwards a 4-page carbon typed manuscript of "The Borrowed Brains" (included with this lot).
[With:] "The World of 1975-1985. A keynote address by Frederik Pohl... at AMA's Annual Personnel Conference, February 9-11, 1966." Photocopy of typed manuscript. 16 pages, 4to.
[With:] Related carbon, typed and photocopied correspondence concerning Pohl. (45)
