A BYZANTINE GOLD AND GARNET BUCKLE
Circa 5th-6th Century A.D.
The oval loop round in section, tapering where the hook of the tongue and the kidney-shaped catch-plate join, the tongue set with a rectangular garnet, the catch-plate riveted to a back plate and hooked around the loop, decorated with two drop-shaped and one oval garnet cabochon, all surrounded by rows and clusters of granulation, within a border of filigree ropes
