The French Academy in Rome played a leading role in the mid-18th Century revolution of taste that brought about a return to the 'antique' in architecture and the decorative arts. A marble garniture, comprising of replicas of celebrated antiquities, became an increasingly essential element of fashionable chimneypiece furnishings; and by the end of the Century had also spread to the dressing of grand banqueting tables. These lionesses, derived from the Capitoline basalt antiquities, and the golden vase, recalling the so-called 'Gaeta' wine-krater vase in Naples, provided appropriate bacchic subjects for handsome rooms of entertainment.
