Lot Essay

The present lot is one of a number of reduced bronze versions of Jacopo Sansovino's Bacchus dated to circa 1550 and housed in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence. A number of these bronzes originated from the worshops of Massimiliano Soldani Benzi (1656-1714) such as an identically sized example sold in Christie's, London, 15 May 1984, lot 156.
