Late 17th Century
The hinged divided rectangular top inlaid with a vase of flowers flanked by birds supported on acanthus scrolls hung with floral garlands, opening to reveal a olivewood-lined interior crossbanded in kingwood with five drawers and a hinged front decorated with foliage above four drawers with conforming decoration, flanking a recessed door decorated with a flower vase, framed by stylised foliate borders, the sides with conforming decoration, on square tapering legs with giltwood captials joined by double Y-shaped stretchers, on turned feet, the back decorated with foliate scrolls, restorations, some feet replaced, the stretcher partially reconstructed re-using the original marquetry, the pewter inlay re-used

Lot Essay

The acanthus-enriched foliate marquetry is designed in the Louis XIV antique manner and relates to engravings of the artist Androuet Du Cerceau published in his Livre d'Ornemens de feuillage of circa 1650.
