Lot Essay

With their characteristic panelled roundels, these elegant dining-chairs are closely related to those at Sperlingsholm castle in Halland, which were ordered by Baron Carl Adam Wrangel around 1820. Wrangel commissioned the celebrated architect Gustaf af Sillén (1762-1825) to rebuild the castle, which was completed in 1820. Af Sillén had previously worked for Prince Carl at Rosersberg, where he worked from 1797 until approximately 1815. His work typifies the Swedish variant of the fashionable Empire style, and included various designs for furniture (H. Groth, Neoclassism in the North, London, 1990, pp. 138-157; pp. 162-165; p. 217, fig 85). A related set of eight dining-chairs was sold at Sotheby's New York, 26 March 1994, lot 328 ($25,875;£17,250).
