1987 LOLA COSWORTH CART SINGLE SEATER

Engine: DFX, turbocharged V-8, 2.65 litre, four overhead camshafts, 670bhp at 11,900 rpm; Gearbox: transverse five-speed sequential; Suspension: four-wheel independent with wishbones and pushrods operating co-axial coil spring/shock absorber units; Brakes: four-wheel steel discs with carbon pads. Single seater.
The CART, standing for Championship Auto Racing Teams was inaugurated in 1979, following disputes with the USAC - United States Auto Club over the running of its series. Later in the 1990s, when there were disputes again between the regulations for the Indy 500, CART would again diverge, forming the Indy Racing League.
A truly International series, locations for the races have expanded beyond the American borders into Mexico and Europe on occasions.
In the UK, the introduction to this form of racing for most enthusiasts came when Williams Renault's Nigel Mansell, departed immediately for America to run in this series after winning the 1992 Formula 1 World Championship. But drivers have crossed the Atlantic in both directions, Jacques Villeneuve and Alex Zanardi and most recently Juan Pablo Montoya joining Formula 1.
Lola's first entered Indy racing car was the T-80 in 1965, and the , was the latest in a series of single seaters built by the company to race in the CART series. Powered by the latest Cosworth DFX, it proved extremely successful in the right hands, providing Bobby Rahal with that year's Championship.
This Lola, made its debut for the Burago sponsored team in 1987, at Miami in the Nissan Indy Challenge race run over a temporary road circuit at Tamiami Park, where it was driven by Fulvio Ballabio. Qualifying in 23rd place (of 28), unfortunately the car suffered from clutch problems and retired on the 17th.
It is understood to have then been run in Europe at Monaco, under the Genoa Racing team of Angelo Ferro, and is still liveried with the sponsorship for that period. At the end of its racing career which we believe to have been in 1990, the single seater joined the present collection ownership.
Christie's do not believe that the Lola has been started or run since that time, it would therefore presumably require a complete mechanical overhaul and preparation to enable it to return to historic competition.
