1959 VOLKSWAGEN TYPE II 23-WINDOW MICROBUS
Registration No. Not UK Registered
Chassis No. Tba
Engine No. Tba
Red and black with fawn interior
Engine: flat opposed four cylinder, two pushrod operated valves per cylinder, 1585cc, 46hp at 4,000rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: independent front and rear; Brakes: four wheel drums. Left hand drive.
The chassis layout and mechanical packaging of the Volkswagen Beetle lent itself to expansion and VW was quick to take advantage of it in 1949 with the 8-passenger Transporter. Its stretched platform flat floor layout was ideal for a variety of seating and commercial layouts and the Transporter quickly acquired a loyal following who used its capacious interior for everything from recreation to procreation.
The Transporter, later called the Microbus, wasn't fast, but its attributes of economy and durability more than made up for a leisurely pace and affected an attitude that found a place in the Sixties. It was the leader in a trend that spawned a school of emulators. Volkswagen enhanced the Microbus's inherent utility by fitting a glazier's dream array of windows, and thus the designation of the Microbus offered here, '23-window'. The folding sunroof is standard equipment on Deluxe models such as this.
This Microbus is presented in appropriate period two tone livery. Its interior appears to be completely original and shows basic age, but no visible tears or damage, furthermore it is ostensibly complete with original headlining, rails etc. However on closer inspection it was noted that the steering wheel was cracked. Externally, its cosmetic condition is generally good and presentable, but not concours. The roof windows have clearly been renewed at some stage, but otherwise, the sunroof and all other windows are seem to be to original specification.
